Best of Both Worlds
The unique design of COMPACT
programs offers you the convenience of a canned program and the flexibility of user-written software. In COMPACT, the specific details of a problem can be given in two ways:
- using the graphical preprocessor, which provides a fast and easy means of interactively setting up a large
number of standard problems, and/or
- through a user-written Adaptation routine (in Fortran), which allows introduction of nonstandard features
such as special temperature-viscosity relationship or a nonlinear boundary condition. In the Adaptation routine, you can also overwrite some or all of the specifications entered through
the preprocessor.
With this flexibility in
problem specification, you can customize the program to your needs. By imaginative design of the Adaptation routine, you can apply COMPACT programs to an endless variety of engineering
problems.
A Rich Gold Mine of Examples
A very valuable part of the
COMPACT program package is a set of carefully chosen illustrative examples ranging from heat conduction to combustion chambers to heat exchangers. The 2D and 3D programs each come with 25
example problems. Whereas some examples are completely based on the preprocessor, the others illustrate the introduction of special features (e.g., nonlinear boundary conditions, additional
transport processes, body forces, customized output, etc.) via the Adaptation routine. As you become familiar with the structure of the COMPACT programs, you will be able to build a variety
of advanced Adaptations of your interest.
