Model for Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI)

The CVI process is used to manufacture high performance Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) components for aerospace applications. We have used a two-level micro-macro approach to develop an accurate and efficient computational model for the prediction of the progress of densification during the CVI process. For a given textile preform, the micro model determines the effective geometric and transport properties through a rigorous analysis of the unit cell of the textile architecture. The macro model uses the anisotropic effective properties of the porous preform to predict flow, heat transfer, deposition rate, and hence the progress of densification. The macro model is very general and can predict the densification process for all types of CVI processes e.g. isothermal, thermal-gradient, and thermal gradient-forced flow CVI.
