Study of the effect of operating conditions on NOx and unburned carbon in a coal-fired furnace

The objective in this project was to study the effect of burner stoichiometric ratio on NOx and unburned carbon in a coal-fired furnace.

The analysis was performed using the coal combustion model developed by Innovative Research, Inc. The coal combustion model is based on the equations governing turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer, chemical reactions, thermal radiation, particle transport, and pollutant production.

The coal combustion model was used to simulate conditions within the furnace for a range of burner stoichiometric ratios. The results predicted by the model correctly reproduced the experimental results from a large scale test furnace. The results show that the NOx level at the furnace exit decreases monotonically as the stoichiometric ratio is increased. However, the unburned carbon in the ash shows a minimum at a stoichiometric ratio near 0.8.
